Treatment of AIDS

AIDS has no cure and there are currently no FDA-approved vaccines to protect against HIV, but there are vaccines that are currently being studied.

Currently aids treatment consists of  antiretrovirals medications which slow the progress of the disease, and allows patients to stay healthier and live longer.

AIDS treatment drugs used to treat HIV infection are called antiretrovirals, because they fight HIV, which is a type of "retrovirus." Protease Inhibitors (PIs), such as lopinavir/ritonavir (Kaletra), disable protease, a protein that HIV needs reproduce itself.

Most AIDS treatment medications have side effects, which your doctor will discuss with you. Individuals respond differently to medications and side effects may vary.
